Zinfandel is a grape that’s going places. Since the 1980s it has risen to become California’s most widely planted variety and gone from producing mostly rosés (some of them very good) to top quality reds. It now enjoys cult status in the region, so we’re naturally very excited about this new release from Raymond Vineyards. The estate’s roots are among the oldest in the Napa Valley, and, since it was recently bought out by the charismatic Frenchman Jean-Charles Boisset, its vineyards have been certified organic and biodynamic. Several of its recent wines have appeared in Wine Spectator’s Top 100. Though unoaked, the wine has plenty of spice alongside powerful cherry and damson fruit. Enjoy with roast beef, steak or braised lamb shanks.
